The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, offering a wide range of subjects. We seek an enthusiastic postdoctoral scientist (f/m/d) for carrying out scientific research on aerosol climate interactions. The successful candidate will join the Energy Meteorology Group, carrying out fundamental meteorological research for renewable power. The three-year position has a focus on testing hypotheses on dust-aerosol effects on climate using observations and modeling. It includes the collaboration with the ECMWF in the ESA-funded project: “Dust & Ocean Modelling and Observing Study (DOMOS)” with focus on the North Atlantic.


  • Conduct scientific research on dust aerosol effects on climate by performing own climate model simulations and by using different observational data
  • Develop programs for systematic analyses of big data, e.g., with automated detection algorithms and machine learning
  • Write scientific publications for high-impact journals of the field, and present results at international conferences
  • Contribute to teaching activities in meteorology

The position is available as soon as possible on a full-time basis. It is limited to a term of 3 years. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.

  • Excellent PhD degree in meteorology or related field
  • Excellent written and oral English skills
  • Very good meteorological knowledge, ideally with focus on atmospheric dynamics, radiation and/or climate change
  • Experience in writing programs (e.g., python, shell scripts, CDO and/or FORTRAN90/95), handling big data sets (e.g., netCDF), creating high-quality graphics and presentations, working with LINUX/UNIX and HPC, publishing peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals
  • Ability for teaching meteorology, creative problem solving, time management, and team work
