PhD position (f/m/d) in biological physics
Institute for Biological Physics

The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, offering a wide range of subjects. With its six faculties and its interfaculty centres, it offers a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines and internationally outstanding profile areas, supported by the administration with its services.

In the framework of CRC 1310 („Predictability in Evolution“), researchers in the Bollenbach and Krug groups at the Institute for Biological Physics are investigating antibiotic resistance using a combination of evolution experiments and theoretical approaches. The groups apply concepts from physics to understand interactions between resistance mutations.

YOUR TASKS

  • Apply and improve high-throughput techniques for isolating resistant mutants and measuring bacterial growth in the presence of antibiotics
  • Use next generation sequencing to elucidate the genetic origins of antibiotic resistance
  • Analyze experimental data using computers
  • Develop theoretical models of resistance evolution and epistatic interactions in collaboration with theorists

WE OFFER YOU

  • an interactive and supportive research environment
  • a diverse and fair working environment
  • support in reconciling work and family life
  • flexible working time models
  • extensive advanced training opportunities
  • occupational health management offers
  • local transport ticket at a discount for UoC employees
