In its second phase, the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1211 of the German Research Foundation (DFG) wants to deepen our understanding of the mutual evolutionary relationships between Earth surface processes and biota in (hyper-)arid desert systems, where both are severely limited by water availability 
(https://sfb1211.uni-koeln.de). The successful candidate will be a member of the CRC’s Integrated Research Training Group (IRTG), which aims at educating a generation of truly interdisciplinary doctoral candidates in the fields of Earth and Life Sciences, a combination of growing importance in the course of ongoing and accelerated global change.

Your Tasks

  • Contribute to the reconstruction of Cenozoic precipitation 
  • changes in the Atacama Desert, Chile
  • Participate in field work on endorheic mud pans in the Atacama and Namib Deserts
  • Analyse sedimentary records from mud pans by a multidisciplinary approach with focus on sedimentology/geochemistry
  • Integrate the results with marine- and model-based paleoclimate research within and beyond the CRC 1211
  • Publish the research results in international scientific journals


Your Profile

  • M.Sc. or equivalent in geology, sedimentology, geochemistry or a closely related field
  • Skills in multidisciplinary analyses of sediment sequences
  • Interest in paleoclimatology and sedimentary processes
  • Ability and interest in interdisciplinary research
  • Very good knowledge of English obligated, Spanish skills beneficial
